1800s Bronze Napoleonic Cannon Thermometer Reamur Fahrenheit Scales French.
Patinated bronze, glass and mercury, Napoleonic style, cannon and cannon balls shaped, wall hung thermometer with Reaumur and Fahrenheit scales, unsigned, made on the Continent, perhaps in France, mid to late 19th century.
Measuring 7.5 inch x 3.5 inch x 3.5 inch, this is an ebonized patinated bronze thermometer. The mounting of the thermometer is on a Napoleonic era replication of a cannon with cannon balls at the base of the weapon where the cannon balls form the base of the instrument as it sits on a circular pedestal comprised of black slate. The mercury tube is mounted vertically along the length of the cannon itself and carries two scales, Fahrenheit and Reaumur. {The Réaumur scale is French and is also known as the "octogesimal division". It is a temperature scale for which the freezing and boiling points of water are defined as 0 and 80 degrees respectively. The scale is named for René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, who first proposed a similar scale in 1730. It was used in France until it gradually disappeared by the end of the 19th century.}
