    Description

    19th Century Ross Mensuration Sphere, Geometrical Mass Volume Measure. Very rare 1880-1900 measuring device, a Ross Mensuration Ball Block for measuring solids. It shows mass and density. It's a solid hand carved wood ball, with gorgeous patina and leather strapping, that opens up into triangular pieces. It has leather seams and early brass screws. It measures about 8" tall, is quite heavy, measures 24" circumference. Maple Wood is well worn with soft edges. Ball is held together with a wire wrapped around several brass pins at one end. Originally was a silk string. It appears Well used as a mathematical geometry teaching tool. Mensuration is the science of numerical representation of geometrical magnitudes.
