ANTIQUE EASTERN CATHOLIC CHURCH, BYZANTINE RITE, EPITAPHIOS (PLASHANITSA) SHROUD
Beautifully hand painted central panel of Christ, his body being prepared for burial, with Saint Joseph, John the Theologian, Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Saint Nicodemus, Cherubim in corners canvas with golden metallic trim and fringe, very nice quality of painting, beautiful piece of religious artwork that needs to be framed
The Plashanitsa is used on the last two days of Holy Week as part of the ceremonies marking the death and resurrection of Christ. It is placed on the Altar table.
Age - 19th - early 20th Century
Size - approximately 29"H x 52 1/2"W, without fringe
Condition - creases and associated wear to image, probably some tearing at creases, hole in canvas - see last photo, substantial damage to fringe in some areas
