The icon belongs to the type of Theology, that is, depicting the Teaching (Word) God.
The icon "Spiritual Labyrinth" refers to the so-called symbolic and didactic direction in icon painting. It appeared in Russian religious art in the 16th century. Works of this type are usually associated with the interpretation of theological literature and are instructive in nature.
The “Spiritual Labyrinth” allegorically represents the earthly path of an ordinary Christian. The depiction of a person's spiritual quest through the labyrinth first appeared in Western European engravings of the 17th century. Russian icon painters turned to a similar plot only a century later. This plot was often copied not only in icon painting, but also in folk art. But, wherever the artists painted the labyrinth, it almost always symbolized the search for spiritual and physical salvation.
The master divided the space of the “Spiritual Labyrinth” icon into three parts: the upper one is heaven with the city of Jerusalem, the middle one is earthly life and the lower one is hell. In the very center, the author depicted a maze with many exits. One of them leads to heaven, twelve more - to hell, one way out for each sin. From right to left: fornication, despondency, greed, drunkenness, vanity, pride, murder, anger, mercy, envy, slander, gluttony. The icon painter added five more to the seven deadly sins. Thus, he wanted to strengthen the edifying character of the icon.
Before the icon, they pray in ignorance of what to do, and ask for God's help in difficult situations.
